What’s new on Netflix (February 2019)

Netflix January 2019 new shows

February may be the shortest month of the year, but Netflix will still pack in a ton of new and returning TV shows and movies in its lineup in just 28 days.  So what’s new on Netflix? Great question. Here are the highlights from Netflix for February 2019, which feature superheroes, time loops, murdering art pieces, and more.

The Umbrella Academy – Season 1 (Feb. 15)

Out of everything new on Netflix this month, we’re probably most excited about this one. This show is the latest superhero comic book adaptation to make its way to the small screen, but it’s a bit different than the Marvel and DC Comics series. Based on the Dark Horse comic book created and written by Gerard Way (lead singer for My Chemical Romance), The Umbrella Academy centers on a group of people with superpowers born in 1989 to moms who were not pregnant the day before.

In the present day, these people come back together to try to solve who killed the “father” who adopted them so long ago, and maybe prevent the end of the world. Ellen Page, Mary J. Blige, and Kate Walsh star in the show, which will have 10 episodes in its first season.

Russian Doll – Season 1 (Feb. 1)

The time loop plot device has been used a lot, but it looks like Russian Doll might put in a few twists to this sub-genre. Natasha Lyonne (Orange is the New Black) co-created and stars in this eight-episode comedy series. She plays Nadia, a video game developer who lives in New York City. During her 36th birthday party, she dies. Then she finds herself alive again, at the beginning of the party. We will have to see if this show will make us forget about Groundhog Day when we watch it.

Velvet Buzzsaw (Original film; Feb. 1)

Jake Gyllenhaal teams up again with Dan Gilroy, the director of Gyllenhaal’s acclaimed 2014 drama Nightcrawler, for this very odd satirical horror film. Velvet Buzzsaw focuses on the modern art scene in Los Angeles, where it seems almost anything could be called “art.” Gyllenhaal plays a critic who has discovered the work of a recently deceased artist, but it looks like his creations might have a murderous mind of their own.

One Day At A Time – Season 3 (Feb. 8)

Reboots of TV shows are a dime a dozen, but the new version of the classic 1970s sitcom One Day At A Time might actually be better than the original. Season 3 of the new version will once again focus on a single Cuban-American mother raising her family on her own. The first two seasons of the Netflix reboot tackled major topics like immigration, veterans issues, and more. Season 3 will probably do more of the same, while also still being a very funny sitcom. If you haven’t watched the show yet, this is the perfect time to start.
