Oppo shows off in-display selfie camera on smartphone, but when is it coming?

It seems like quite a few smartphone sensors have moved underneath the display, such as the earpiece and fingerprint scanner. In-display selfie cameras might be the holy grail right now, and Oppo has shown off a video demonstrating the tech on real-world hardware.

In a video posted to Twitter, the company shows the upper half of a smartphone. From here, an Oppo employee activates the selfie camera, takes a photo, and then obscures the camera with their finger.

We don’t get a good look at the picture taken by the in-display selfie camera, but this will be a key factor in determining whether Oppo is ahead of the curve. After all, what’s the point of this tech if results are much worse than a normal selfie shooter?

Oppo isn’t the only company aiming to bring in-display selfie camera tech to life, as Samsung previously confirmed its intention to do so as well. But the Korean firm reportedly suggested that the tech was still roughly a year away from launching in a commercially available smartphone. If Oppo can indeed beat the Korean firm to the punch, it’ll be a major feather in its cap.

A selfie camera under the screen will allow phone manufacturers to create a full screen smartphone without the need for notches, punch holes, pop-up selfie cameras, or slider designs. Would you buy a phone with an in-display selfie camera? Let us know in the comments!
