HMD Global expands US budget lineup with the Nokia 3.1 for AT&T and Cricket

Official press render of the Nokia 3.1 for AT&T and Cricket Wireless.

Earlier today, HMD Global announced the newest addition to the company’s U.S. smartphone lineup. Called the Nokia 3.1, the phone will be available on AT&T and Cricket Wireless as the Nokia 3.1 A and Nokia 3.1 C, respectively.

In terms of specs and features, the two phones are virtually identical. That means a 5.45-inch display with HD+ resolution, an 8MP rear camera, a 5MP selfie camera, and a USB-C port. The phone also features the Qualcomm Snapdragon 429, 2GB of RAM, 32GB of expandable storage, and a clean version of Android 9 Pie.

Oh, and there’s a top-mounted headphone jack.

Speaking with The Verge, HMD Global said the Nokia 3.1 isn’t part of the Android One program. However, the phone will receive OS and security updates at a “regular cadence and as frequently as possible” over the next 18 months.

HMD Global also noted the difficulty of breaking into the U.S. market, which is why it wants to gain a strong foothold with cheaper devices:

We started our initial inroads to the U.S. market with unlocked devices through Amazon and Best Buy more than a year ago, and this year we started working with some carriers in the U.S. to see how Nokia could reach a larger scale here.

The U.S. could eventually see more premium offerings. Until then, the Nokia 3.1 A will be available at AT&T and “select Walmart stores” starting June 10. The Nokia 3.1 C will be available at Cricket’s physical and online stores starting June 14. HMD Global will announce pricing once the phones are available in stores.
