Google will send off the original Google Pixel with one final update

Today, Google confirmed to The Verge that the original Google Pixel smartphone will receive one more update. That final piece of software will push to the device in December, which will then mark the end-of-life for the OG Pixel smartphone.

That means that, come 2020, the original Google Pixel will officially be abandoned by Google.

Alarm bells started to ring earlier this week when Google pushed out the latest security patches for its line of Pixel devices, but the Google Pixel and Pixel XL didn’t get any love. Google confirmed to The Verge that the two original Pixel phones won’t see that November update, but they both will get one in December.

Allegedly, the December update will encapsulate the tweaks that came with the November update as well as the future tweaks arriving in December.

It isn’t too surprising that the original Google Pixel and Pixel XL are now at the end of their update lives. When Google launched the devices back in 2016, it promised two years of Android upgrades and three years of security patches. Google followed through with that promise and then some, considering it also pushed Android 10 to the Pixel and Pixel XL even though the two years of updates promise meant that Google could have skipped it and left the devices languishing on Android 9 Pie.

Knowing Google, the company will likely include some Easter Eggs or other bonus surprises with this final December update, considering the original Google Pixel was such a landmark product for the company.
