Huawei Mate X replacement screen costs more than Galaxy Note 10

Huawei Mate X Foldable Phone Hands On display unfolded

One of the burning questions around foldable phones is just how much it will cost to get the screen repaired in the event of accidental damage. Samsung has revealed its details for the Galaxy Fold, but what about the Huawei Mate X?

Fortunately, Gizmochina has spotted an updated guide to component costs on the Huawei China website. The guide now includes the Mate X, and notes that a new screen costs 7,080 yuan (~$1,006). Other noteworthy Mate X component costs include a battery for 278 yuan (~$40), and a motherboard for 3,579 yuan (~$509).

It’s unclear whether the replacement screen cost takes labor and other factors into account, but those wanting to go the DIY route should definitely keep this price in mind.

The 7,080 yuan price tag means a replacement screen for the Huawei Mate X is actually slightly more expensive than the 128GB Pixel 4 XL ($999) and the Samsung Galaxy Note 10 ($949). Heck, you could buy two Asus Zenfone 6 phones for the price of one screen repair. Then again, the Zenfone 6 doesn’t have a foldable display — although its flipping camera mechanism is pretty cool too.

Meanwhile, Samsung charges $149 for first-time Galaxy Fold screen repairs right now — it reportedly goes up to $600 for subsequent replacements. This is all very exorbitant, but if you can afford a first-generation foldable phone, chances are good that you can afford the screen repair costs.

Repair prices will hopefully come down as the technology matures, but you only need to look at curved screen phones to know there’s no guarantee of price parity with traditional displays.
