Galaxy S20 series tipped to offer smoother display than Google, OnePlus

One of the major smartphone trends in the last 12 months has been the move to high refresh rate displays, offering a smoother visual and touch experience in theory.

We’ve previously seen Asus, Google, OnePlus, and Razer all offering this technology, and it now looks like Samsung is joining the party. According to SamMobile, citing “highly reliable sources,” Samsung’s next flagship series (tipped to be the Galaxy S11 or S20 series) will offer a 120Hz refresh rate.

It’s unclear if all phones will receive the refresh rate upgrade or if it’s limited to the standard and Plus models only. Nevertheless, a higher refresh rate opens the door to a higher frame-rate and therefore smoother performance in menus, video games, and more.

It wouldn’t be the first time we heard about Samsung dabbling with 120Hz technology either. The firm’s One UI 2.0 beta contained a hidden setting to change to a higher refresh rate, while the new Exynos 990 supports the standard as well.

A Samsung Galaxy S11 or Galaxy S20 with a 120Hz display would have a higher refresh rate than the likes of the Pixel 4 and OnePlus 7T though, which currently offer a 90Hz refresh rate. A higher refresh rate usually equals smoother performance, but will the average user notice a significant improvement going from 90Hz to 120Hz?

Higher refresh rates also consume more juice than a standard 60Hz refresh rate, so hopefully those rumors about significantly improved battery capacity turn out to be true.

Would you buy a Samsung Galaxy S11 or Galaxy S20 series phone without a high refresh rate screen? Let us know in the comments section.
