These delightful little dragons are no joke in a battle, so make sure you come prepared!
Pokémon Go is bringing back Latios and Latias, known formerly as the Eon Duo, for one weekend only. From 1 PM PST January 24 through 27, 2020, you’ll have another chance to catch this Legendary pair.
What are Latios and Latias?
Latios and Latias are Legendary Pokemon from the Hoenn region, making them Generation 3 Pokemon. These Dragon/Psychic creatures have shown up in several episodes of the show and movies, almost always together, and are rare among Legendary Pokémon in that they have a gender. Latios are always male and Latias are always female. They are often referred to as twins, but in Pokémon Go, you will be battling them separately, like any other Raid.
What are the best Counters?
As Dragon and Psychic types, Latios and Latias are weak against five different types: Dragon, Bug, Ice, Fairy, and Dark. These are the move types you want to focus on when building your team for taking on these Raids. There are lots of Pokémon who can effectively counter the Eon Duo, but these four are the best of the best:
Rayquaza
The absolute best Dragon-type Pokémon in Pokémon Go, Rayquaza will tear Latios and Latias to shreds. The moveset you’re looking for is Dragon Tail and Outrage, as Raquaza’s Flying-type moves aren’t particularly useful here. Rayquaza is a Legendary Pokémon, and so it has had limited availability. Still, if you have them, use them.
Salamence
The final evolution of Bagon, Salamence boasts the second-highest Attack stat out of Non-Legendary Pokémon in Go. Thanks to the Bagon Community Day, Salamence is probably already in your roster too. You’ll want Dragon Tail and Draco Meteor for its moveset. You can also make do with Outrage for the Charged move if you just don’t have the TMs to spare.
Dragonite
The original OP Dragon, Dragonite set the standard for pseudo-Legendary Pokémon, and it’ll serve you well against the Eon twins. Thanks to the Dratini Community Day and the Special Research that rewards you with a Dragonite, not to mention plenty of other opportunities, you probably have a few solid Dragonites. For its Fast move, Dragon Tail or Dragon Breath work well, and for a Charged move, Outrage or Draco Meteor will put down Latios and Latias quickly.
Palkia
Another Legendary Pokémon, Palkia, has really high stats but not the best moves. Still, its niche is fighting other Dragon-types, so it will work well in these Raids. You’ll want your Palkia to know Dragon Tail and Draco Meteor, but in a pinch, Outrage can work as well.
Back ups?
Seeing as the best counters include two Legendary Pokémon and two pseudo-Legendary Pokémon, you might not have a full team of those four. Fortunately, there are plenty of other good Pokémon to bring to these Raids.
- Haxorus with Dragon Tail and Dragon Claw
- Garchamp with Dragon Tail and Outrage
- Darkrai with Snarl and Shadow Ball
- Chandelure with Hex and Shadow Ball
- Giratina (Origin Forme) with Dragon Breath and Shadow Ball
- Tyranitar with Bite and Crunch
- Dialga with Dragon Breath and Draco Meteor
- Weavile with Ice Shard and Avalanche
- Mamoswine with Powder Snow and Avalanche
- Mewtwo with Psycho Cut and Shadow Ball
- Latios with Dragon Breath and Dragon Claw
How many players?
While it is possible for some of the top players with the best counters, ideal weather, and the best possible moves to take out Latios or Latias with only three players, you’re probably going to want six or more players. Rainy or Windy weather has the potential to boost Latias’ moves, while Clear/Sunny and Windy weather will boost Latios’ moves. Snowy, Foggy, and Windy weather will boost your counters’ moves. For Latios, the Charged move Solar Beam is the easiest to beat. A Latias with Dragon Breath and Thunder is easiest to beat. The more factors weighing in your favor, the smaller the group you can bring to take on these Raids.
