10 horror movies on Amazon Prime you can stream with a subscription

Horror movies on Amazon Prime

We love scary movies. Amazon Prime Video provides a huge selection you can purchase for your personal collection, or rent for the night. However, we decided to dig through Amazon’s library made available to Prime subscribers and select a handful of our favorites. Here’s our pick for the best horror movies on Amazon Prime you can stream right now with a subscription.

Editor’s note: We will update this list of the best horror movies on Amazon Prime regularly as new movies arrive on the subscription or we simply find something better.

1. An American Werewolf in London

An American Werewolf in London 1

Many werewolf movies are just silly. Not this one. It’s simply brilliant and an all-time horror-comedy classic. Two New Yorkers decide to backpack across England. David takes the bite to become the movie’s monster. His pal Jack is ripped apart to serve as the movie’s comic relief: A mutilated zombie with lots of “kill yourself” advice. The movie’s first transformation scene is a huge showcase for special effects expert Rick Baker.

Another werewolf movie you might want to consider is the more-recent Ginger Snaps. It’s about two teenage outcast sisters, Ginger and Brigitte.

2. Child’s Play

Child's Play

Child’s Play is all about possession and revenge. It’s a slasher flick laced with dark humor brought to “life” by Brad Dourif’s excellent voice acting.

Dourif’s character, serial killer Charles Lee Ray, finds himself dying from gun wounds in a toy factory. Before Ray bites the bullet, he casts a voodoo spell on a children’s doll to capture his soul, transforming the toy into a rage-fuelled psychopath.

If you can’t get enough of Chucky, all six sequels are available to rent. Want more evil doll action? Check out 1986’s Dolls and 1975’s Trilogy of Terror.

3. City of the Living Dead

City of the Living Dead

Originally called The Gates of Hell in the U.S., this Italian horror movie was extremely violent for its day. Moviegoers literally walked out in disgust.

The movie begins with the gates of Hell opening its doors thanks to a selfish priest committing suicide in a church cemetery. Mary Woodhouse saw this death in a vision and hits the floor, seemingly dead. Journalist Peter Bell decides to investigate her “death” only to discover she’s buried alive. Both head to the remote town of Dunwich to somehow stop the gates from swinging wide open.

City of the Living Dead is the first installment in The Gates of Hell trilogy. You can rent the second (The Beyond) and third (House by the Cemetery) films on Amazon.

4. Deathgasm

After forming their metal band Deathgasm, outcasts Brodie and Zakk break into the house of metal star Rikki Daggers and steal sheet music labeled The Black Hymn. They return to band mates Dion and Giles and perform the hymn but stop when lights begin to flicker.

The band doesn’t play the hymn again until after an altercation between Zakk and a few rivals. Seeking revenge, they want whatever dark power the hymn has to offer. But the plan backfires, as the hymn doesn’t grant dark powers but unleashes something evil instead.

5. Friday the 13th

Friday the 13th Series

Unlike another slasher classic Halloween, revenge fuels Friday the 13th. If you haven’t watched this movie already — and honestly who hasn’t — then spoiler alert: Jason isn’t the resident butcher in the first movie. He takes over the chop-a-thon in the second movie and doesn’t stop until his confrontation with Freddie Krueger.

You can stream the first eight movies through your Amazon Prime subscription. Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday (#9), Freddy vs. Jason (#11), and the 2009 reboot are all available to rent. The tenth movie, Jason X, is currently not available.

Other great horror movies similar to the Friday the 13th series includes Madman, Maniac, and Sleepaway Camp.

6. Hellraiser

Hellraiser movies

Hellraiser was a wickedly evil film for its time. It’s based on The Hellbound Heart, a 1986 novella written by Clive Barker. He wrote the screenplay and directed the film, breathing life into his mysterious puzzle box and the Cenobites. It’s a love story at heart, with Julia seeking out victims for her lover Frank to ingest like a meat slurpy.

You can rent the nine sequels, though Barker moved on after Hellbound: Hellraiser II. Other movies on Amazon Prime based on Barker’s literary works include Book of Blood, Nightbreed, Lord of Illusions, and Candyman: Farewell to the Flesh. You can also rent Rawhead Rex and The Midnight Meat Train.

7. Hereditary

Annie Graham’s 78-year-old mother, Ellen Taper Leigh, is dead. The plot becomes immediately weird right after the funeral, as you discover something odd was going on between Ellen and Annie’s 13-year-old daughter, Charlie. Even more, the girl likes to decapitate birds.

But Annie is already a mess and things only get worse for the family in this gripping modern horror classic.

8. Jigsaw

This movie continues the Saw canon ten years after John Kramer’s death in Saw III. Here you have the typical Saw scenario: A group of victims gathered together to face judgement and confess their crimes. Other major players include Detective Hunt and Detective Halloran who investigate the new murders. There’s also pathologists Logan Nelson and Eleanor Bonneville, the latter of which has an obsession over Jigsaw and his flesh-ripping toys. What an ideal suspect!

If you can’t get enough of the Saw franchise, the first six movies are also available to rent.

9. My Bloody Valentine (1981)

My Bloody Valentine

Who needs candy on Valentine’s Day when all you desire is sweet revenge? The scene is a reinstated Valentine’s Day dance that was retired after a former miner driven insane killed his two supervisors and vowed to kill again during each celebration. Naturally, a killer shows up dressed in a masked miner outfit at the revived event and things quickly take a macabre turn.

Other movies like My Bloody Valentine you can stream from Amazon Prime include Final Exam and The Slumber Party Massacre.

10. Starry Eyes

Starry Eyes

Waitress Sarah Walker seemingly gets her lucky Hollywood break by auditioning for The Silver Scream. In the first audition she must rip out her hair and scream. The second audition requires her to get naked, though the script doesn’t call for nudity. Her third audition requires a personal one-on-one with the producer. Sarah begins to deteriorate in the following days like a rotting corpse, puking up maggots and losing fingernails.

Honorable mentions

Attack of the Killer Tomatoes — Okay, so this isn’t horror. It’s stupid, really stupid, but in a good way. It’s one of those movies you need to experience at least once.

Carrie — Carrie is based on Stephen King’s novel about bullied 16-year-old Carrie White. The movie features an iconic scene where our lead goes into a claret-soaked telekinetic meltdown at prom.

Mausoleum — A demon, a 300-year family curse, and a mausoleum tomb: What more could you ask for? Susan Walker has demonic issues passed over from her mother. The only remedy is to cram the demon back into the family mausoleum.

Killer Klowns from Outer Space — Here’s another cheeseball movie you should watch at least once. Aliens come to earth to consume humans like food, only they appear as hideous clowns parked in a giant circus tent spaceship.

The Exorcist III — Though it’s the third film in the series, this movie is based on William Peter Blatty’s sequel novel to The Exorcist called Legion. It’s set 17 years after the original novel and film.

The Return of the Living Dead — After John Russo parted ways with George A. Romero, he retained the rights to “Living Dead.” The result is this dark comedy that introduced us to zombies eating brains. “Send more paramedics!”
